This piece is a semi-realistic green tree frog, done totally in eggshell mosaic. It comes in an 11"x14" black shadowbox frame, ready to display on your wall. Mosaic is an art form that is at least 4,000 years old. A mosaic is an artistic design made out of any materials assembled together to form another image. It originated in mesopotamia, where the earliest mosaics were made from stone, shell and ivory.

A lot of different mediums have been used throughout history. Tiles called "tesserae" were used by the greeks.

During the byzantine era, a type of tile called "smalti" was used. Islamic mosaics were made using a technique called "zillij".

Mosaics have also been found to be connected to mayan culture as well. Micro mosaics were popular in the 1700's. Modern mosaics can be made from any material, in any size, such as traditional stone, ceramic tesserae, enameled or stained glass, carved stone, bottle caps, shells, beads, charms, chains, gears, coins, pieces of costume jewelry, and even eggshells.

Mosaic art is a major part of human history. So many different cultures, at different times in history, have been a part of making it the art form that it is today. It's one of the many things that ties us all together and gives us a freedom to express ourselves. The best thing about mosaic art is that there is no such thing as the "wrong way".

We choose to carry on the tradition of mosaic art using eggshells. There are several steps to our process. First the eggshells are sterilized.

Next the design is hand-sketched on the canvas. Then it is painted with acrylic. The next step is to lay each piece of eggshell individually.

Then we color it with alcohol inks. Last, it is sealed with a triple-thick high gloss clear to protect it.
